If you're thinking about a career as a Personal Stylist you might be wondering what it takes to be successful. You've got an eye for style, you stay up-to-date on the latest styles and trends, you feel confident with your ability to coordinate colors, and you've got a strong sense of what works and what doesn't. So that must be all it takes to be successful, right? While you definitely have some of the key skills that are required for personal stylists, there are some equally important things that will take you from being just a personal stylist to being a successful 6-figure personal stylist.
Be ready for hard work - As with anything in life, what you get out of it depends on what you put in. If you really want to take the personal styling world by storm you need to be willing to put in a lot of hard work to make it happen. It's not as easy as some may think, it's not as glamorous as some may think, and it can be hard work physically and mentally. You'll be working long hours to grow your business and find new clients and sometimes you'll even be working for free. It's hard work and you need to be ready! But the results will definitely be worth it!
Be a good listener - The art of listening is often overlooked as an important skill in business, but for personal stylists, it's a must-have skill. You need to be able to really listen to your clients and act on what they are telling you. If your client doesn't want to wear a particular style even though it would work well for their body shape, don't waste time trying to convince them. Listening to our clients allows us to build a true connection with them and creates a trusting relationship that can turn a one-time consultation into a lifelong client.
Be confident - Part of being a successful personal stylist lies in being confident about what you do and what you have to offer. If you don't feel confident that you have the ability to provide your clients with the transformation or outcome they are looking for then it will show. One way you can improve your confidence is to gain the skills you need through personal styling training and education, but it's more than just skills, it's also your mindset. You have to believe in yourself and your ability to create a successful personal styling business otherwise you'll hold yourself back. Be confident in who you are, what you do, and what you are going to achieve!
Be stubborn - Believe it or not, being stubborn plays a significant role in being a successful Stylist. This doesn't mean getting into arguments when you think you're right and someone else is wrong, what it means is not giving up! Many Stylists throw in the towel when they don't get clients within the first few months of setting up their business. To be a successful personal stylist, you have to be stubborn, dig in your heels, and don't give up!
Have passion - Many people have an interest in fashion and style, but that doesn't mean they should be Stylists. To be a successful Stylist you need to be passionate about it. It is your passion that is going to get you through the long hard days while you develop your career and grow your personal styling business.
It’s important to remember that personal styling skills can be learned through training, but the characteristics of success are innate. So, if you have these qualities within you then have the foundation to become a successful Stylist! 😊
