If you're thinking about a career as a fashion stylist or a personal stylist you might be wondering what it takes to be successful. You've got an eye for style, you stay up to date on the latest styles and trends, you feel confident with your ability to coordinate colors, and you've got a strong sense of what works and what doesn't. So that must be it, right? You have what you need to become a successful stylist?
While you definitely have some of the key skills that are required for stylists, there are some equally important things that will take you from being a stylist to being a successful stylist:
Be ready for hard work - As with anything in life, what you get out of it depends on what you put in. If you really want to take the styling world by storm you need to be willing to put in a lot of hard work to make it happen. Styling is not as easy as some may think and it can be hard work physically and mentally. You need to be willing to start at the bottom and put in long hours and do unglamorous jobs to work your way to the top.
Be a people person - One of the keys to success is the ability to be build relationships with other people. From building relationships with clients, to connecting with fashion store owners, to working with photographers on set, to networking to promote your business. Being a stylist is a person-faced job and you'll need to feel comfortable with your skills in this area.
Be detail oriented - Do you see the big picture, the small picture, and any picture in between? Stylists need to be extremely detail oriented, and be able to adjust, adjust, adjust, until everything is just right.
Be stubborn - Believe it or not being stubborn plays a big role in being a successful stylist. This doesn't mean getting into arguments when you think you're right and someone else is wrong, what it means is not giving up! Many stylists throw in the towel when they don't get clients within the first few months of setting up their business. To be successful, you have to be stubborn, dig in your heels and don't give up!
Have a true passion for fashion - Many people have an interest in fashion, but that doesn't mean they should be stylists. You really have to have a true passion for fashion! If you don't love what you do then your success will be limited.
